GIS (my original background) and Visualisation / planning come together at last.

Its made by ESRI 'the' name in GIS.

City Engine

CityEngine® is a standalone software that provides professional users in entertainment, architecture, urban planning, GIS and general 3D content production with a unique conceptual design and modeling solution for the efficient creation of 3D cities and buildings.

Unity for simulated training

2011-08-24

xD Visuals is currently utilsiing Unity (see below) for development of OHS procedural training simulation for use within industry. I used to work in simulation at Thales (defence aerospace) this technology has moved into mining and other industries are taking it up to. eg emergency response, construction and other scenarious where risk managment requires training to avoid pitfalls. I see alot of potential for this in avoiding occupational risk.

Unity is an integrated authoring tool for creating 3D video games or other interactive content such as architectural visualizations or real-time 3D animations. Unity consists of both an editor for developing/designing content and an engine for executing the final product. Unity is similar to DirectorBlender in the sense that an integrated graphical environment is the primary method of development.

Alternative to manual 3d models

2011-07-04

Project Photofly 2.0 is a free new technology preview from Autodesk Labs that allows anyone with a digital camera to create 3D models from photographs using the web. With a common point and shoot digital camera, users can quickly and easily generate accurate 3D models of nearly any object they can photograph. Project Photofly 2.0 harnesses the power of cloud computing to translate photos into detailed 3D models. The 3D models can be manipulated through professional design software or free design applications like Autodesk's 123D. Project Photofly 2.0 allows users to share their models with others through YouTube and Autodesk's free Inventor Publisher Mobile Viewer application for the iPad, iPhone, and iPod Touch. See autodesk.com/photofly for more info.
